180 Initiative at Ronald McDonald House

The first 180 Initiative event of 2016 took place with four members of our staff volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House near Central DuPage Hospital. For those of you who don’t already know, the Ronald McDonald House Charities has several different components ranging from grants and scholarships to comfortable hospital rooms and mobile care, but for this activity, we volunteered at one of the houses.

180 Initiative Volunteers (L to R): Tom Nanninga, Paulina Dziadosz, Mark Lindroth and Anne Swenson.

The Ronald McDonald House is a home-away-from-home to keep children and their parents together while the child undergoes medical treatment. The families that stay at the house have their own bedroom suites but share common spaces like a playroom and kitchen. We took a tour of the facility which was just built last year and it is amazing!

Our task while volunteering last month was to bake cookies for the families staying at the house. At first thought, it might seem like a small or even insignificant job, but the inquiries in anticipation about what kind of cookies we were baking and the heartfelt thank you we received from a parent showed us that it wasn’t a small task at all, but instead made a world of difference for those staying there. We appreciated being able to bring a little bit of home to the guests and even had a little fun ourselves!

Paulina Dziadosz shows off the tray of snickerdoodles her and the 180 Initiative volunteers made for the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House.
